Cobalt aluminate blue spinel (CoAl₂O₄) is produced by calcining a mixture of cobalt (II) oxide and aluminum (III) oxide at high temperatures, resulting in an interdiffused crystalline spinel structure. The material may contain modifiers such as MgO, ZnO, Li₂O, and/or TiO₂. Cobalt blue pigments are among the most durable blue pigments available, offering outstanding chemical and thermal stability. They are suitable for chemically aggressive environments and exterior applications where color permanence is essential.
Cobalt aluminate blue pigment exhibits strong opacity in both ultraviolet and visible light ranges. It is chemically inert, heat resistant, stable under UV exposure, non-bleeding, and non-migratory. Its exceptional durability and hiding power make it ideal for applications requiring resistance to heat, light, and weathering. It is compatible with most resin systems and polymers and is non-warping, making it suitable for use in coatings, inks, dispersions, concrete, plastics, and similar systems.
