Properties, Storage and Cautions:
Tantalum nanoparticles are highly reactive and flammable, so they must be handled with care. Rapid movements and vibrations should be avoided. The powder must be protected from sunlight, any form of heating, moisture, and physical impacts. Because particle coagulation is a significant concern, the material should be sealed under vacuum and stored in cool, dry conditions. Air contact should be avoided.
Applications:
-
Electronics & Passive Components: Used in electrolytic capacitors and thin-film resistors due to high stability and excellent capacitance per volume, making them ideal for compact devices such as smartphones, computers, and medical electronics.
-
Alloying & Metallurgy: Added to nickel-based superalloys and other high-performance metals to enhance strength, ductility, and oxidation resistance. Nanopowder form supports reactive sintering and precision blending in powder metallurgy for aerospace and high-temperature applications.
-
Biomedical & Implantable Devices: Due to strong biocompatibility and bio-inertness, tantalum is used in orthopedic implants, dental prosthetics, and bone scaffolds. Nanoparticles enable porous coatings, drug delivery functions, and enhanced tissue integration.
-
Energy & Electrochemical Systems: Utilized in solid-state batteries, fuel cells, and electrolytic systems, where high surface area supports efficient charge transfer and electrode stability, especially in harsh chemical environments.
-
Thin Films & Nanotechnology: Serves as a precursor for sputtering targets, CVD/ALD coatings, barrier layers, and nanostructured ceramics used in semiconductor fabrication, optical coatings, and advanced nanoengineering applications.
