Material Overview

Titanium Tin Carbide (Ti₂SnC) belongs to the MAX phase family (Mn+1AXn), a unique class of layered ternary carbides and nitrides known for combining the best attributes of metals and ceramics.
Ti₂SnC ceramics possess:

Metal-like properties

  • High electrical and thermal conductivity

  • Excellent machinability

  • High damage tolerance

  • Superior thermal shock resistance

Ceramic-like properties

  • High modulus of elasticity

  • Excellent high-temperature stability

  • Strong oxidation and corrosion resistance

Because of this dual behavior, Ti₂SnC serves as an advanced ceramic material with exceptional multifunctional performance.

Applications

Due to its combination of thermal, mechanical, and chemical advantages, Ti₂SnC is suitable for high-tech applications, including:

  • Aerospace and Aviation Components

  • Defense and Weapon Systems

  • Nuclear Industry Materials

  • Electronic and Information Technology Devices

  • High-temperature structural parts

  • Matrix or reinforcement in composite materials

Notes on Material Preparation and Purity

The production of high-purity Ti₂SnC ceramics is challenging:

  • Traditional methods use Fe sintering assistants or hot pressing, which can introduce impurities such as TiC, Sn, and FeₓSnᵧ.

  • Conventional sintering at 1150–1600 °C often results in long processing times and impurity phases that are difficult to remove.

  • These impurities significantly degrade the mechanical and thermal properties of the final ceramic.

As noted in the literature (J. Am. Ceram. Soc. 99(7), 2016), no publicly available method currently guarantees reliably high-purity Ti₂SnC ceramics, making high-purity powder products especially valuable for research and advanced development work.
