Applications
Ytterbium is not found in a free state in nature and typically occurs with other lanthanides, especially in minerals like pegmatite. It readily oxidizes in air and reacts with water. Ytterbium is used in stainless steel manufacturing to enhance grain refinement and strength. It is also applied as a dopant in solid-state lasers and utilized in optical glass and ceramics.
