Samarium is moderately stable at air but it ignites at 150°C. It is not found free in nature. It can be found in the minerals gadolinite, monazites, samarskite, cerite, and bastnäsite.
Samarium is used as an alloy in making permanent magnets. It is used in making samarium–cobalt permanent magnets which have high resistance to demagnetization.
It is also used as a neutron absorber in nuclear reactors. It is used in the core of carbon arc lights with other metals which are used in studio lighting and projector lights.
