Applications
Gadolinium powder is relatively stable in dry environments but oxidizes when exposed to moisture, forming oxides. It naturally occurs in minerals such as xenotime, monazite, and bastnaesite. As a rare earth metal, gadolinium possesses distinctive characteristics that make it valuable for specialized uses, including semiconductor fabrication and nuclear reactor shielding. It also demonstrates notable magnetic behavior—weakly magnetic at room temperature and strongly ferromagnetic at lower temperatures.
Gadolinium powder is utilized in electronics to enhance memory speed and capacity. In medicine, it is administered intravenously as a contrast agent for MRI imaging to improve clarity. It is also employed as a dopant in glass.
