Applications
Erbium, named after Ytterby in Sweden, is relatively stable in air and oxidizes more slowly than many other rare earth metals. When ionized, erbium fluoresces a bright pink color, making it valuable for imaging and optical applications.
It is widely used as a doping agent in optical fibers, enabling optical pumping and signal amplification. Erbium is also utilized in sunglasses and jewelry due to its sharp absorption bands across visible, ultraviolet, and near-infrared light. Additionally, it serves as a colorant for glass and porcelain and provides the characteristic pink color in cubic zirconia.
